My first little rant.....

Home sweet home?

I'm eighteen years old and living in East Kentucky (hopefully not for too much longer). Although I was born here and I do see the beauty of the sireen-ness of the "mountains", the bad outweighs the good. Sure, the people are sweet and small town ways are cozy but this place is seriously so isolated that when you go out of state, you feel more at home than you would at your actual home. Let me explain that statement-- Most of us all watch TV, we get on our social networking sites, we are up to date on our society's pop culture.... Of course our lives are based around these things.... that's how the world works. However, a lot of people HERE only know one thing-- The Beloved Mainstream. Usually when someone asks me who my favorite band or artist is, they are puzzled at my response because I don't reply with a Modern Country starlet or mainstream rapper's name. It's hard to just carry on a conversation because no one knows what I'm talking about nor do I not know what they are talking about! It seems as though anything anyone around here is concerned about is whatever is popular. Not only that, but I was "blessed" with the Eastern Kentucky accent that just makes me mad every time I hear it. When you go out of state and open your mouth, people just laugh at you! Whoever said home is where the heart is, lived anywhere but here!
